I was schooled as a mechanical engineer because that was what was expected. He also had quite an abrasive side and could alienate people fairly easily. My father John Unertl Jr., was a brilliant engineer, but frankly didn’t care much at all about ‘marketing’, relegating this to mostly bullshit. This gradually built a resentment within my father and their relationship began to fall apart. My grandmother being a company founder was quite reluctant to leave the company even though she was getting up in years. I don’t plan on writing a book here so I will condense this discussion to it’s bare bones form. Each conmtrbuted to, and detracted from the business. All of the personalities involved here were strong personalities in their own right. My grandparents started the company, my parents worked at the company, I worked at the company. I have the authority to discuss the intimate details of this since I AM the last John Unertl that worked at the company you are referring to. “ Gentlemen, Let me clear up some inaccurate or most likely a lot of bogus information out there regarding the Unertl Optical Company and make clear some facts about the rifle scopes themselves. AS one forum “expert” even made the idiotic claim that the Unertls were made in a barn. I saved Unertl’s only post on the matter and the rest of the posts were nonesense. I have long forgot where I got it from but a clever googler I’m sure could turn it up. I saved his comments as they were a peak into the history of a legendary firearms industry company. As usual with most gun forums, few of the poster new much about much and were posting all kinds of BS about Unertl and US Optics ( which did some shady stuff after Unertl went into limbo and got sued for their troubles irrespective of what you may hear otherwise) until most unexpectedly John R Unertl himself popped up to set the record straight. Last night I got thinking about Unertl again after a friend asked me something about those old beauties and remembered some years ago there was a forum discussion some where or other about what happened. The previous branch head said I would be able to have the scope returned when it was decommissioned if I kept my paperwork (which I of course did).As you may have noticed my love o vintage target/varmint weapons and optics have been on my brain recently. I'll have to get a hold of the current guy at Quantico. Before Iraq, the decommissioned ones were supposed to go to the Scout Sniper Association for the bought price of $700, however the USMC most have gotten a better deal from Iraq. My understanding is now, the active ones are going to the Iraqis, although I never followed up & confirmed if this happened for sure. The USMC squeezed every cent out of them for sure before going to the S&B. Only two other groups I know of were permitted to use them, the FBI and Armed Forces of Canada.Īt the time, circa: 1978, they were ahead of their time, but since, we have progressed much further down the road. When John Unertl made them, they would not sell them to anyone, and because they are marked "USMC SNIPER" they are historically pretty valuable as a collector item. Getting a Unertl Prism marked USMC SNIPER is the scope to find, but good luck doing so legally, getting a USO one marked USMC SNIPER is just as good if you ask me as many saw service, any thing else an homage to the life of John Unertl and is nothing more than a $700 scope being sold to capitalize on the Unertl Name but never saw any service. The original Unertls were never allowed, and most floating around are illegal to be had, and when seen there are elements floating around who usually make calls to have them picked up, or at least investigated. When USO got the gig to refurbish them, they were allowed to put the scope out properly marked to the public. but that is me.Īt the time the Unertl was a good scope, but hung around way too long and was past its prime. The Unertl 10X or T, model was nothing more than assembled parts, and in my opinion not worth near as much, as the USMC SNIPER marked USOs. The Unertl 10X and the USO are the same thing, no one ever called it the MST 100, just the Unertl, it was a blanket statement regardless of whether it was an original Unertl, (Before passing) or after when USO made them.
